Virginia's expertise and skill is unparalleled in the entire City of Chicago. As my first acupuncturist, I was spoiled to Virginia's standards - effectiveness of treatment within a day, ease of communication via email, gentle needle insertion that feels like a quick ant bite.   I met Virginia when my health was quickly deteriorating. Multiple doctors from Chicago's Top 3 Hospitals were unable to diagnose me with my overlapping multiple symptoms. The first cured ailment was my hereditary undiagnosed fibroids. The second cured ailment was another hereditary poor circulation in hands and feet that manifested as heart palpitation. My bad cholesterol is slowly lowering. My odd allergies to everything is now gone. My gummy smile is eliminated.   I now look 10+ years younger as a side effect to Virginia's acupuncture treatment. I have never looked better.   Virginia sincerely cares for her patients. Virginia's support is much appreciated when my own family didn't believe that I was ill.

I first sought acupuncture treatment from Virginia Burns after falling and shattering my left wrist, which required surgery to repair. Although my wrist healed fairly well, after several months I was still in severe pain, and developed a condition known as complex regional pain syndrome, a form of chronic pain that can develop after surgery and where the pain is out of proportion to the severity of the initial injury. After trying cortisone shots, 75 sessions of physical therapy over the course of one year, consultations with several different doctors, and a year of taking heavy-duty narcotic pain killers, nothing helped. My pain and immobility was so severe, I even considered having my wrist broken again in order to dissolve the scar tissue/calcification that doctors thought might be causing the pain. As a last chance, I decided to try acupuncture to help me resolve my pain syndrome, which was now lasting over 14 months.   In doing research on acupuncture, I came across a video clip of Virginia explaining her treatment philosophy and the medical concepts behind acupuncture. She seemed so “down to earth” and passionate about the benefits of acupuncture, my intuition told me that we would be compatible in a professional relationship. I was a bit apprehensive at my initial appointment but was pleasantly surprised at how tiny the acupuncture needles were, and how calming the first session seemed to go. After my first treatment, I noticed some tiny changes, feeling less anxious and seeing the color increase in my skin and under my fingernails. As fantastical as it still seems now, after several more treatments, the pain in my wrist was almost completely gone, and no longer bothers me except for an occasional, tiny twinge when the weather changes.   Based on this experience, I continued to seek regular treatment from Virginia, at least one visit every two weeks for over five years. She has helped me with a variety of issues including strengthening my immune system, treating me for common colds and viruses; resolving recurring knee pain and muscle injuries; remediating situational anxiety and sadness and generally, keeping my body tuned into itself and helping me feel healthy and centered. In my opinion, Virginia is one of the most competent, caring and compassionate health care professionals I have ever encountered. She will never tell you she “can’t” treat a problem, but will rather always say “let’s try.” When she moved from the Midwest to Hawaii, I felt like I lost not only a wonderful acupuncturist, but a dear friend.   For anyone who is anxious or skeptical about seeking acupuncture treatment, please keep an open mind and make an appointment with Virginia. It’s possible that not everyone will have the same, amazing results that I did. However, for the skeptics out there I believe you will be pleasantly educated and surprised. For others of you who feel that you have nowhere else to turn to resolve pain or other treatment issues, you can experience not only significant improvements, but may also find an acupuncturist and friend for life.

Virginia is a colleague and a friend who demonstrates kindness, efficiency, gentleness and compassion in her practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Her thoughtful and lighthearted approach to puts patients at ease immediately, even first time acupuncture patients.  Virginia is professional in all aspects of her practice; she understands the value of quality, confidentiality, documentation, and patient safety. Virginia is honest and a clear communicator who strives to give her patients total care at a reasonable price.  Virginia’s knowledge and experience working with western medicine is a unique and impressive benefit to her patients: she understands the integration of western and Chinese medicine, patients trust her decisions and are comfortable sharing signs and symptoms related to their condition. (Virginia was teaching pharmacology at the Midwest College of Oriental Medicine when I met her and hired her to work at Northwestern Health System’s Center of Integrative Care.)  Virginia is generous in her pursuit of furthering the practice of Chinese medicine; she teaches anyone who shows interest and openly shares her knowledge of the medicine with coworkers, students and other acupuncturists.  Virginia uses a very gentle needling technique that amazes me in its effectiveness and its positive outcome. As her patient, I barely know that many needles have been placed as I am drifting off into a deep relaxed state of consciousness.  Virginia is an expert Chinese herbalist. She investigates herbal companies to determine that their product is safely manufactured and tested for purity and efficacy before she will recommend the product to her patient. She advises her patients on the benefits of the recommended herb, or combination of herbs, and informs her patient what she expects the herbs to accomplish while cautiously monitoring the patient’s short and long-term response to the herbs. SAFETY FIRST! Virginia is a good friend, a fantastic colleague and a highly trained Chinese medicine practitioner-let her treat you, it will be a positive experience. Virginia’s facial rejuvenation acupuncture sessions are fantastic- my skin looks refreshed, I feel lighter and combined with her at-home facial exercise recommendations I see that my appearance is improving.

Virginia is a gifted healer who has helped me with issues that others weren’t able to resolve. After working to relieve a respiratory infection first with my doctor, then with an ear, nose, and throat specialist, and then with another acupuncturist -- all of whom worked on the issue for over 6 months with no progress or relief, Virginia was able to approach the issue in a way that brought me relief immediately and she completely resolved the issue in a few short weeks.    In that instance as well as at other times, I believe Virginia’s background as a nurse helped her to understand my doctor’s approach to my treatment and to integrate an alternative approach with acupuncture and Chinese herbs in such a way that I didn’t feel my healers were competing but rather that Virginia was able to complement the care I had received and give me results that had eluded them.
